AIAA Region I, YPSE-08
YPSE-08, the AIAA Region I Young Professional Student and Education Conference, was held on Friday, November 21, and Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008 at the Kossiakoff Center at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Lab in Laurel, Maryland.
Dr. Matt Mountain, Director of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, Maryland, was the Keynote Speaker. STScI is also known as "home of the Hubble", and Dr. Mountain demonstrated this to the audience with a presentation of "Hubble's Greatest Hits". This slide show packed in one stunning image of the near and far reaches of our universe after another, each one seemingly more extraordinary than the last. Since the Hubble Space Telescope was launched 18 years ago, much of the audience recognized many of the images produced by this iconic telescope.

Dr. Matt Mountain receives framed MESSENGER photographs of Mercury from Tom Milnes and Jon Malay. MESSENGER had just successfully completed its second flyby of Mercury weeks earlier. The spectacular image on the right is one of the first to be returned, and shows the departing planet taken about 90 minutes after the spacecraft’s closest approach to Mercury.
