On
Wednesday, October 25, 2006, the Baltimore and National Capital
Sections held a Space Systems Technical Committee Dinner meeting at
NASA Goddard's Space Flight Recreational Facility. The invited
speaker was Dr. Gang Wang, a Senior Engineer at Techno-Sciences,
Inc., an Assistant Research Scientist at University of Maryland,
College Park, and the NCS 2006 Young Engineer/Scientist of the Year.
While Dr. Wang directs and performs research development focused on
rotorcraft systems technologies, smart materials, advanced actuators
and controls for air vehicle performance enhancement, vibration and
motion control, mechanical and dynamic analysis, and test and
evaluation of prototype flight systems, his talk was about fishing
rods! Dr. Wang has used his wide expertise to develop smart fishing
rods using SMA materials, linear/nonlinear finite element model to
analyze the static and dynamic behavior of fly rods. This led to
computer-aided comprehensive fly rod/line design technology, which is
a revolutionary development in the fly rod industry. Mike Wooster,
Chair of the NCS Section, and Pramud Rawat, Chair of the Baltimore
section, joined those in attendance.
